How Technology Can Benefit Seniors

How Technology Can Benefit Seniors

Most people think that the elderly don’t know how to use technology. Although, seniors are starting to catch up with embracing the world of technology and learning how to use it.

Seniors Using Technology

Seniors using technology is starting to become more common with 4 out of 10 seniors using the internet and owning a smartphone. Even some senior living homes are starting to have technology programs that show seniors how to integrate technology into their daily lives. This keeps seniors connected, mentally active, and physically safe.

Some benefits of technology are using Facebook to connect with grandchildren or playing games, such as scrabble and solitaire keeping the mind engaged. Technology can be a great way of learning new things, having fun, and getting seniors engaged in new activities.

Enhancing Senior’s Lives

Incorporating technology with socializing with friends and family can improve their quality of life. The elderly have taken a liking to technology because they can keep up with their younger family members. It can even benefit as a healthy emotional outlet.

There are so many different things that the elderly can learn with technology. For example, an app that shows what birds have been spotted in their area code and shows their bird songs and what they look like. Also, learning about different artists and museums through the google arts app.

Here are a few ways that technology can improve lives:

Gaming

Wii fit is a great way to get up and moving. It has been shown to improve cognitive function, mental agility, and physical health. Also, video games used in the right way can promote socializing. It can be a great way to interact and have fun with the grandchildren.

Tablets

This small and light-weight form of technology is perfect for easy use and the font size can be adjusted making it easy to read. Tablets can be used for many things, such as learning a new language, reading a book, and listening to music. Certain apps can promote cognitive function and even promote health by tracking health information.

Skype

Skype is a great way to connect with family and friends. If a family member is far away it’s easy to keep in contact by being able to see their faces and hear their voice. Skype can be used over the computer, smartphone, or tablet.

Wi-Fi

With different forms of technology, wireless internet is needed to enjoy the benefits. Wi-Fi allows access to many apps, websites, and downloads. For example, a new book needs to be downloaded from the internet to able to read it on a device.

Big-screen Televisions

Vision gets worse as people age, so having a large television can enable them to see special programs. This can be anything from jeopardy to travel programs. Shows like these keep people engaged and allow them to constantly keep learning. It can show them different cultures of the world and allow them to have interesting things to talk about while socializing with others.
