These Are The 8 Most Common Health Concerns in Seniors Today

There’s no longer a need to be afraid of growing older. It’s possible to live a happier and fuller life over a longer period of time thanks to the miracles of modern medicine. Entering one’s twilight years often puts them at risk for a number of health problems. It’s important to know what to expect, whether you’re looking for yourself or a loved one. Here are some of the most common problems encountered by seniors.

8 Most Common Health Problems in Seniors

1. Obesity

Obesity is a significant threat to one’s well being. The risk of obesity-related death only increases when paired with old age. Extra weight will put extra pressure on the internal organs such as the heart and lungs. The more an organ is constrained, the less it can function.

2. Arthritis

After obesity, arthritis is the most common health problem in old age. Arthritis is so much more than pain that flares up once in awhile. Arthritis is a gradual breakdown of cartilage and bone, taking place slowly over time. The rate at which osteoporosis progresses can be increased by factors such as diet and vitamin deficiencies.

3. Cancer

Others listed may not be as prevalent and fatal as cancer. Cancer is responsible for millions of deaths per year with dozens of different variations, ranging from brain to breast to lung and throat. Believe it or not, one of the biggest cancer risks out there is advancing age. It doesn’t take much to get sick with a genetically damaged body.

4. Alzheimer’s Disease

The gradual breakdown of the body is one thing, but the breakdown of the mind is a completely different issue. Alzheimer’s disease is terrifying. Unfortunately, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s. But check-ups and regular mental stimulation like crossword puzzles and reading are great ways to keep your mind healthy and strong.

5. Diabetes

Diabetes and obesity generally go hand in hand. Typically, poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle causes diabetes. Many forms of diabetes may be inherited. Diabetes  is entirely manageable, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not a health concern. Those with diabetes are at an increased risk of disease.

6. Depression

Health issues aren’t always physical; they can also be mental. Senior depression is a serious concern that can lead to premature death.

7. Oral Decay

Our mouths become drier as we grow older, making it easier for bacteria to grow on our gums and teeth. This can make the prevention of cavities, tooth decay, and even gum diseases such as gingivitis much more difficult. By regularly brushing and flossing, you can keep your healthy smile at an older age.

8. Respiratory Disease

A weakened immune system means respiratory diseases are easier to catch. If you have asthma or bronchitis, something as easy as breathing can become complicated. If that wasn’t bad enough, respiratory diseases present an increased risk of pneumonia and influenza to seniors.
